Anthropic Drops Two Major Releases in 48 Hours
Anthropic had itself a weekend. On June 30, they launched Claude Sonnet 5 — marketed as “our most agentic Sonnet yet” with improvements in reasoning, tool use, coding, and knowledge work. It became the new default for Free and Pro users at $2/$10 per million tokens (input/output). Same day, they announced Claude Science, a customizable research workbench connecting Opus 4.8 to 60+ scientific databases.
Then July 1: Fable 5 returns globally. The export controls that suspended both Fable 5 and Mythos 5 have been lifted for Fable 5. Mythos 5 remains restricted to approved U.S. organizations.
The Fable 5 redeployment is significant — it was the first time U.S. export controls were enforced at the API level, retroactively cutting off global access to a deployed model. That precedent matters. The fact that it was reversed suggests either the classification threshold shifted or Anthropic successfully argued their case. China’s AI Companion Law Takes Effect July 15 — Doubao Pulls the Plug
Nine days from now, China’s Interim Measures for the Administration of AI Anthropomorphic Interactive Services goes live. The regulation, co-issued by the Cyberspace Administration of China plus four partner agencies, requires AI services simulating human personality to implement:
- Anti-addiction systems with time limits and session interruptions
- Mandatory usage notifications at interaction thresholds
- Instant-exit mechanisms returning users to a non-AI default state
ByteDance’s Doubao (345 million MAU) is shutting down agent features on July 15. User configs and histories go read-only until October 15, then permanent deletion. ByteDance says export your important agent content via screenshots or text sharing before the 15th.
Alibaba’s Qwen is in a worse spot — no announced migration path for users with established agent configurations. Immediate permanent data loss is on the table for anyone who misses the deadline.
The structural problem: persistent-memory agents cannot coexist with mandated friction. An agent designed to maintain emotional continuity and workflow context across sessions fundamentally contradicts regulations requiring usage interruptions, notification popups, and clean-exit mechanisms. Both companies chose shutdown over architectural reconstruction.
ByteDance hints at a future “compliance-first architecture” relaunch. Alibaba has been silent.
Gemini 3.5 Pro Enters Week Two of July Still in Preview
Google’s flagship missed its June 30 GA target. Enterprise testers on Vertex AI flagged three linked problems:
- Token efficiency: Significantly higher consumption on extended agentic tasks than benchmark headlines suggested
- Coding regression: Gemini 3.5 Flash already beats 3.1 Pro on coding benchmarks, but 3.5 Pro hasn’t fully closed the long-context reasoning gap

The benchmark design is interesting: it measures steerability — how much human correction an agent needs — rather than just raw solve rate. This aligns with the emerging industry realization that “can it eventually get there with enough nudging” is the wrong metric. “Can it stay on track autonomously” is what determines whether you actually save time.
OpenAI’s GeneBench-Pro also dropped: 129 biology problems where GPT-5.6 Sol hits 31.5%. Niche but signals OpenAI’s push into scientific reasoning benchmarks beyond coding.
The Trust Bottleneck: AI Coding Agents Need Independent Review Layers
Futurum Group published a piece arguing that trust, not output quality, is the bottleneck for AI coding agents. Tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot generate code rapidly, but self-review creates a conflict of interest — the same model that wrote the bug is asked to find it.
The proposed solution: separate independent AI verification systems that audit agent output without sharing the generator’s context or incentives. Think of it as CI/CD for agent reasoning — a separate model (or ensemble) that validates logic, checks security implications, and verifies test coverage before human review.
This mirrors the “Merge Wall” problem identified in the MIT 100K+ developer study: code volume is up 180% but shipped software only +30%. The production funnel is the bottleneck, and agent-generated code that looks correct but isn’t is clogging review pipelines.
