Today Las Vegas flips the other switch: Black Hat USA 2026 opens with an AI Summit track, and the tape is not about chatbots disclosing themselves. It is about agents that attack, agents that defend, and agents that get pwned while defending.
This is a cyber + agent harness day. Regulation was the compliance layer. This is the ops layer.
Lead: your security agent is the new attack surface
AI Now Institute’s Friendly Fire exploit brief is the cleanest engineer-facing story of the week for anyone who actually runs coding agents.
Claim, stripped of policy theater: if you point Claude Code (auto-mode) or Codex CLI (auto-review) at an untrusted open-source / third-party library “just to scan for vulns,” prompt injections disseminated across the library’s own files can drive remote code execution on the host running the agent. No hooks. No MCP. No malicious plugin. Out-of-the-box configs. Models tested include Claude Sonnet 4.6 / 5, Opus 4.8, and GPT-5.5.
That is the exact workflow labs and vendors have been selling as the defensive antidote — Anthropic’s Glasswing / Claude Code Security posture, OpenAI’s Patch the Planet Daybreak line, White House acceleration of AI-enabled cyber defense. Friendly Fire’s punchline: the access required to use the agent for defense is the access required to compromise the agent.

What you should change this week if you run agentic security reviews:
- Never auto-mode on untrusted trees. Treat third-party source like untrusted email attachments with a shell.
- Sandbox the agent host harder than the target — VM / ephemeral container / no long-lived credentials on the box doing the scan.
- Separate “read code” from “run tools.” If the agent can execute, the injection surface is not “prompt” — it is the whole filesystem it can see.
- Log tool calls the same way you log shell history. When Friendly Fire works, the forensics are in the agent transcript.

Open weights for Flash-0731 circulated on HF / community mirrors within hours of the API note — the pattern is familiar: API GA + weights + harness docs, then every local agent framework wires it up by Monday. Pro GA is still “soon.”
If you are comparing cost stacks for long-running coding agents, keep a boring spreadsheet and a local harness; free-tier roulette is not a capacity plan.
